Running your own business? Thinking about it? Just starting up?

No matter what stage of development your business is in, it is important to familiarize yourself with the situations where legal business forms may be handy, or even necessary.

For example, if you are just starting out, you need to make sure you have a tax identification number (unless you are a sole proprietor). You also want to file the appropriate forms to pay sales taxes, if you are selling products. Most businesses need to be officially recognized by the government, and you can receive good benefits from that distinction.

If you are expanding your business, you may need to incorporate or file a partnership with somebody else. If you want to avoid legal damages to your personal income, you will need to file LLC papers. If you have any employees, you will need to fill out employment forms for them.

Paying taxes is one of the biggest parts of running a business. There are forms to calculate how much taxes you need to pay and when your quarterly payments are due. You can avoid big penalties by paying your taxes quarterly.

You may want or need to accept credit cards and do banking transactions with customers. There are forms necessary to deal with this situation. Any other properties or things that the business will be “owning” will need to be recognized as well.

Even if you are closing your business, there are forms for that, as well as forms to declare bankruptcy if necessary. Look at all the legal business forms available and decide on what you will need.
